Background

Located in Beacon, New York, Dia Beacon presents Dia Art Foundation’s renowned collection of art from the 1960s to the present as well as special exhibitions, new commissions, and educational and public programs. Occupying a former box-printing factory on the banks of the Hudson River, the contemporary art museum spans nearly 300,000 square feet and features installations of works by some of the most significant artists of the last half century.

Position Summary:

The Security team works as the public face of the institution providing safety and security for the Dia Beacon site, building and collection, and providing a positive, professional, and safe environment for all museum visitors and staff. As part of this team, the Security Attendant is responsible for monitoring and enforcing all security protocols and actively responding to security issues, while maintaining a positive visitor and staff experience. The Security Attendant has sensitivity to the unique nature of a contemporary art institution and the ability to coordinate and cooperate with multiple departments on both open and closed days. Security Attendants work closely with the Visitor Services Management Team, Chief Operating Officer, Senior Facilities Managers, gallery attendants, bookshop, café and housekeeping staff as well as and facilities staff during the museum’s public/non-public hours and during special events.  Weekends and most holidays are required. 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for all aspects of security protocols, including monitoring staff interactions, ID badge checks, and contractor logs as well as securing all areas of the Dia Beacon site.
  • Responsible for checking in staff and contractors who are cleared to be in the building each day.
  • Provides constant coverage of assigned areas and communicates effectively over the radio system.
  • Responsible for the safety and security of the visitors during open and closed hours and during special events and programs.
  • Proactively addresses disputes/complaints from visitors in a polite and professional manner with positive customer service.
  • Protects the employees, artwork, building and grounds; handles visitors who breach security in any way, from protecting off limits areas of the building to protecting the artwork, furnishings, and grounds.
  • Key-holder: responsible for opening, securing, and closing the building in conjunction with the Manager of Visitor Services and the Senior Facilities Managers during public and non-public hours.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with the gallery attendant staff and other Dia staff to create a cordial, safe and inclusive atmosphere within the museum.
  • Ensures the integrity of the museum’s perimeter and grounds.
  • Manages the parking areas monitoring all traffic flow coming into and out of the parking areas; which may include directing visitors, employees, deliveries, buses/tours, and groups entering the museum.
  • Monitors closed circuit video, an electronic security system, and successfully performs patrols throughout the museum checking galleries, doors, and windows.
  • Follows Dia’s Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and monitors all safety regulations; responding quickly and effectively in case of an emergency.
  • Effectively informs visitors of Dia’s policies and intervenes when problems arise in a polite professional manner.
  • Assist with special events and programming and help Visitor Services Managers with VIP visits as needed; assist with managing outside vendors during special events.
  • Maintains a current NYS Certified Security License, including required in-service training.

General/Other Responsibilities and Duties:

Provides front desk coverage in entry building maintaining positive customer service; provides general information about the Dia Art Foundation, its collection and sites.

  • Assists with deliveries, in conjunction with the Facilities Department, ensuring proper delivery protocols, effectively communicating with various departments about packages and parcels.
  • Trained and current in the museum’s Emergency Action Plan and carries out the procedures that are part of the EAP. These procedures include managing emergency evacuations and being a liaison with emergency personnel such as Police, Fire Departments, and EMS.
  • Certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid by the American Heart Association.
  • Performs light maintenance of building and grounds during public and non-public hours. Assists in informing Facilities department of needed repairs, leaks, power outages, and other extenuating circumstances and takes steps to ensure the safety of the artwork and visitors
  • Assists in artwork handling, and protection as necessary.
  • Provides assistance to museum visitors by answering questions and giving directions to local venues and travel routes.

Education, Certification, Experience:

  • Current NY State Security Guard License
  • Certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid by the American Heart Association

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Minimum 2 years of security or related experience.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours, as needed, including extended hours, weekends and most holidays.
  • Must be able to work well within a team setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively interacting with staff and visitors in a professional manner and diplomatic manner.
  • Knowledge of museums, contemporary art or cultural organizations a plus.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Standing/walking for long periods of time.
  • Using handheld radios to communicate.
  • Working out of doors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift/carry or move up to 40 lbs.
  • Must be capable of performing light maintenance, such as cleaning windows, removing debris from gallery floors, and occasionally assisting with furniture set up for special events.
