Robert Storr received a BA from Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, in 1972 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1978. He was curator and then senior curator in the department of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City from 1990 to 2002, where he organized exhibitions including the Robert Ryman retrospective (1993­–94) and Modern Art Despite Modernism (2000). In 2002 he was named the first Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. He has been a contributing editor at Art in America since 1981 and has written numerous articles, books, and catalogues. He was visual arts director of the Venice Biennale in 2007 and was appointed professor and then dean of the Yale School of Art from 2006 to 2016.
