Award-winning poet and performer Jon Sands partners with acclaimed jazz trumpeter Riley Mulherkar for an intimate collaboration in and around Dia Chelsea. With words and musical notes as raw material, their one-hour set challenges the lines between public and private. Using the city itself, with all of its movement and energy, as a backdrop, the artists aim to build a new “emotional history”—to use Sands’s term—that is, a living, moment-to-moment archive of how it feels in the here and now.

About the Artists

Jon Sands is a poet and performer living in Brooklyn. His second book, It’s Not Magic (2019), received a prize as part of the 2018 National Poetry Series. He is the facilitator of Emotional Historians, a series of generative writing workshops. His work has been featured in the New York Times and anthologized in The Best American Poetry.

Riley Mulherkar is bandleader, composer, faculty member of the College of Performing Arts at the New School, New York, and artistic director for jazz at Joye in Aiken, South Carolina. A graduate of the Juilliard School, New York, he was the first recipient of the Laurie Frink Career Grant at the Festival of New Trumpet Music and a 2020 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award recipient. Mulherkar is also a founding member of the band The Westerlies.
