La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela: Sound and Light Environment
Marian Zazeela: Sculptures from Still Light

February 1989–March 1990, Dia Chelsea

Overview

The immersive sound-and-light environment created by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela illustrated the prominence of symmetry within both artist’s practice, as well as their dedication to developing deeply meditative sound-and-light installations. The site-specific “time installation” measured continuous frequencies found in sound and light. The environment showcased Zazeela’s mobile sculptures alongside a series of Young’s Rayna synthesizer compositions. This presentation was also accompanied by the world premiere of The Symmetries in Prime Time from 112 to 144 with 119 (7x17), which was composed by Young using sine-wave components generated electronically in real time on a Rayna interval synthesizer. Select sculptures from Zazeela’s Still Light series were shown as an adjacent exhibition. These works, referenced by Zazeela as wall constructions, explored the effects of colored light mixtures on perception.
