Conversation with Constance DeJong on Fantastic Prayers Moderated by Rebecca Cleman and Karen Kelly

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Dia’s Artist Web Projects series as well as the recent restoration of several of those works, Dia presents a series of conversations with artists who have participated in the program. This second event in the series gives focus to Fantastic Prayers (1995), Dia’s first Artist Web Project, by writer Constance DeJong, artist Tony Oursler, and musician/composer Stephen Vitiello.  

The artist Barbara Bloom spoke with Dia curator Kelly Kivland for the first event in this series, which focused on Bloom’s Half Full — Half Empty (2008).

For this event, DeJong shares scenes from the Fantastic Prayers CD, which was published in 2000Rebecca Cleman, executive director of Electronic Arts Intermix, and Karen Kelly, former director of publications at Dia, where she worked on the original Fantastic Prayers project, moderate a conversation with the artist, with guest appearances of Fantastic Prayers collaborators Tony Oursler, Stephen Vitiello, and project designer Steven Dean.

Rebecca Cleman is the executive director of Electronic Arts Intermix, New York City. She has programmed and curated numerous exhibitions and screenings exploring media art history, including Broadcasting: EAI at ICA with Alex Klein at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (2018); Attack of the Packs! (Ghostbusters and early video collectives) for Metrograph, New York (2017); and Aesthetics of Analog for the Museum of Art and Design, New York (2012). Cleman has published writing on video art and cinema in BOMBBrooklyn RailINDEXMoving Image Source, and Screen Slate, among others.  

Constance DeJong is an artist, performer, and writer. She produces fictional textslanguage, and image-based work for prints, performancetheatre, audio, and video installations. She has permanent audio installations in Beacon, New York; London; and Seattle, and is a professor at Hunter College, New York CityDeJong lives in New York.  

Karen Kelly is editor and copublisher of Dancing Foxes Press, New York, with Barbara Schröder. Founded in 2012, Dancing Foxes Press produces books with artists and writers such as Moyra Davey, Zoe Leonard, Nick Mauss, and Ulrike Müller, among others. From 1989 to 2011, Kelly directed the publication program and organized special projects at Dia Art Foundation. She previously held editorial positions at the literary journal Conjunctions and the art journal Parkett.
