Bernd and Hilla Becher: installation of photographs

December 14, 1989 -June 21, 1991, Dia Chelsea

Overview

For this exhibition, the Bechers selected and printed photographs specifically for presentation in the configuration of galleries on the fourth floor of 548 West 22nd Street. The exhibition will include about 70 works, presented as single images rather than the well known groupings of photographs in which the artists have previously shown their work. While the subjects of the photographs will be the industrial architectural structures characteristic of the Becher's work, the emphasis of this exhibition will be on the singularity of the structures and their representation in photographic images rather than on typological groupings. Images of water towers, gas tanks, grain elevators, cooling towers, blast furnaces, and other industrial era structures will be included.
