Andy Warhol, Shadows

December 4, 1998–June 13, 1999, Dia Chelsea

Overview

Andy Warhol’s monumental series of paintings was acquired directly from the artist in 1979 for Dia’s permanent collection. These variously colored silk-screened abstractions are hung edge-to-edge to fill the perimeter of a gallery in conformity with Warhol’s original installation, which he designated as “one painting with . . . parts.”

The paintings were first exhibited in January 1979 at 393 West Broadway, a site that now houses the long-term installation of Walter De Maria’s The Broken Kilometer (1979). Shadows was the second exhibition in Dia’s facility at 545 West 22nd Street, and the work was on view at Dia:Beacon from 2003 to 2011 and again from 2013 to 2014.
