Artist Tom Burr reflects on Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s “Untitled” (Loverboy) (1989), on view at Dia Beacon. In conversation with Dia curator Jordan Carter and deputy director of program Humberto Moro, the two artists’ aesthetic, political, and social intersections will be charted.

Tom Burr is an artist working with sculptural and collage-based forms, photography, and writing. Emerging out of legacies of Minimalism, Conceptual art, feminist art, and institutional critique, Burr’s work has reflected this history alongside his own biography to consider notions of subjectivity and place, desire and states of control, as well as shifting queer conditions. In New York, after attending the School of Visual Arts and the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program, Burr joined the gallery American Fine Arts, Co., where his exhibitions during the 1990s and early 2000s helped ignite a dialogue around expanded ideas of site-specificity, form, queer subjectivities, and current political forces. Burr has exhibited extensively, with solo presentations held at FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims, France; Kunstmuseum Basel, Gegenwart; Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland; SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah; Secession, Vienna; Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; among others. His work has been included in international survey exhibitions such as the Skulptur Projekte Münster in Germany, Istanbul Biennial, and Whitney Biennial in New York. Tom Burr, Anthology: Writings 1991–2015 was published in 2015 and a publication dedicated to the artist’s Torrington Project (2021– ) will be published in 2025. Burr lives in Connecticut and New York.
