15/06/2024 10:30 15/06/2024 12:00 America/New_York Tending Culture with Jeannette Rodríguez Píneda Event detailsSaturday, June 15, 20242 pm–4 pm   Francisco “Pancho” Ramos Community Garden703 East 9th StreetNew York, New York Free. Spaces are limited; registration opens Saturday, June 1. In this workshop, participants will be led through a somatic arts session on natural bundle-dyeing with a focus on the wisdoms offered through flora and soil. Developed in collaboration with the Loisaida Center and sited at the Francisco “Pancho” Ramos Community Garden, a location with deep connections to the Caribbean population of the Lower East Side, participants will be asked to consider what can be learned through the relationship to our plant and stone relatives. Working with soils and aggregates sourced along the Eastern Seaboard, which echo the historical movement of bodies from the Caribbean islands to the archipelago of New York, we will explore “Instructions to touch the earth,” posed by Delcy Morelos in conjunction with her installation El abrazo (The Embrace, 2023), while reflecting on the ways we cultivate connection. Each participant will leave with one dyed-textile piece to be used as an object for connection. Participants will be asked to use organic materials during the program. For questions or concerns about allergies, please contact info@diaart.org. Jeannette Rodríguez Píneda is a queer Afro-Indigenous visual storyteller and education designer whose practice weaves together ethnobotany and plant-based photographic processes. Their work reflects on the closely related subjects of permanence, memory, cycle, and intergenerational trauma. They collaborate with cultural spaces to design art, ecology, and mindfulness programs that decolonize canon-based models of learning through a decentralized approach. With a life practice deeply rooted in creativity as ancestral knowledge, Rodríguez Píneda believes in a somatic knowing through the process of creation. They are also a licensed backcountry guide, leading free bilingual hikes through Movimiento, an initiative to strengthen BIPOC connection to land. Loisaida, Inc. is a Puerto Rican multidisciplinary arts and culture community-development organization founded in 1978. The Loisaida Center provides space, mentorship, resources, and opportunities to emerging community leaders, artists, and creators working in diverse disciplines. We promote a vibrant social life and serve as a community-development incubator for self-sustaining projects and entrepreneurial initiatives at the intersections of culture, art, media, and technology.   Dia Chelsea FALSE DD/MM/YYYY Tending Culture with Jeannette Rodríguez Píneda
