Overview
Walter De Maria’s The Vertical Earth Kilometer (1977) is a site-specific sculpture located in Kassel, Germany. The sculpture is a solid-brass rod, measuring 5 centimeters in diameter and 1 kilometer long, that is fully inserted into the ground with its top flush to the surface of the earth. This work is a companion piece to De Maria’s 1979 The Broken Kilometer in New York.
