Dia Books at Dover Street Market in New York City from November 16 to 27, 2017

New York, NY – Dia Art Foundation will debut a pop-up bookshop at Dover Street Market from November 16 to 27, 2017, to celebrate the launch of two new books on Walter De Maria. The titles commemorate the fortieth anniversary of The Lightning FieldThe New York Earth Room, and The Vertical Earth Kilometer, each commissioned by Dia and completed in 1977.

Adhering to the simple design of its bookshop at Dia:Beacon, the pop-up store at Dover Street Market will be set up as a reading room. It will feature ten of Dia’s books published between 1997 and 2017, highlighting two new books: Artists on Walter De Maria and Walter De Maria: The Lightning Field.

“Dia’s publications are a significant part of the institution’s program, keeping the collection artists that we are closely engaged with relevant and critically germane,” said Jessica Morgan, Nathalie de Gunzburg Director, Dia Art Foundation. “We are grateful to Dover Street Market for their generous support of Dia’s books about Walter De Maria and are happy to have our publications available in Dover Street Market to offer audiences a new place to engage with our work.”

“Dover Street Market, New York, is honored to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of these historic and significant Walter De Maria works in partnership with Dia. We are proud both to support the release of these books, and to welcome Dia’s Deputy Director and Chief Curator Courtney J. Martin, and caretakers of De Maria’s famed artworks, Bill and Patti Dilworth, to our shop to commemorate this special occasion,” said James Gilchrist, General Manager, Dover Street Market New York and Comme des Garçons, USA.

Artists on Walter De Maria is the second installment in a series garnered from Dia’s Artists on Artists Lecture Series. It features contributions from Richard Aldrich, Jeanne Dunning, Guillermo Faivovich and Nicolás Goldberg, and Terry Winters.

Walter De Maria: The Lightning Field features dozens of never-before-seen images of The Lightning Field by photographer John Cliett, who worked closely with De Maria in 1978 and 1979 to document the changes in light across the poles throughout the day. The photographs are accompanied by texts from Cliett, De Maria, Robert Fosdick, and Jessica Morgan.

The other publications for sale at Dover Street Market will include Agnes Martin, Artists on Hanne Darboven, Blinky Palermo: To the People of New York City, Bridget Riley: Reconnaissance, Dia:Beacon, Readings in Contemporary Poetry, Robert Ryman, and Robert Smithson: Spiral Jetty.

A limited-edition wallet was designed by Comme des Garçons to celebrate the occasion.
