Advance Exhibition Schedule

Rita McBride
Dia:Chelsea
October 17, 2017–June 2, 2018

On October 17, 2017, Dia Art Foundation will open an installation by Rita McBride, titled Particulates (2017). The new commission includes sixteen illuminating lasers that span the former Alamo Marble Company building at Dia:Chelsea, 541 West 22nd Street, New York City.

Inspired by time travel, the principles of light and space, and quantum physics, the materials of McBride’s Particulates include water molecules, marble dust, surfactant compounds, and the beams of high-intensity lasers. Her use of light as a sculptural medium marks a departure for the artist who has explored the tension between architectural and sculptural form in her extensive oeuvre since the mid-1980s. Particulates exchanges gravity, a core element in sculpture, for the potential of infinitely traversable space. It unfolds a wrinkle in time.

Particulates is made possible by major support from Brenda R. Potter. Generous support is also provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

François Morellet
Dia:Chelsea and Dia:Beacon
October 28, 2017–June 2, 2018

This fall Dia Art Foundation will exhibit works by the French artist François Morellet. A prolific painter, sculptor, and installation artist, Morellet was one of the founding members of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel, an artist’s collaborative that emerged in France in the early 1960s. While Morellet’s systematic art has been widely exhibited in Europe, including a major retrospective hosted at the Centre Pompidou in 2011, his oeuvre has rarely been shown or studied in the United States. This survey will constitute the first in-depth examination of the artist’s work to be mounted in the United States in more than thirty years.

Presented at Dia’s exhibition spaces in New York City and Beacon, François Morellet will offer a focused exploration of the artist’s wide-ranging practice. At Dia:Chelsea, a large selection of Morellet’s early abstract geometric paintings will be on view with key examples from his later series and neon works. Additionally, Dia will install Trames 3°-87°-93°-183° (1971/2017), Morellet’s first Intégration architecturale, on the façade of its six-story building in New York City.

In a lower-level gallery at Dia:Beacon, Dia will feature a site-specific installation titled No End Neon (1990/2017), which is an expansive neon work newly configured for Dia’s upstate venue in a close collaboration with the Morellet estate and studio. This presentation will allow visitors to encounter Morellet’s practice alongside major installations of work by his American and European peers whom are represented in Dia’s permanent collection.

Dia will also produce a full-color companion volume of scholarship on Morellet.

François Morellet is made possible by significant support from Maggie Kayne. Additional support is provided by the Institut français, Paris, and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States.

Walter De Maria
Dia:Beacon
September 22, 2017–April 2018

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of three permanent Dia Art Foundation sites by Walter De Maria: The Lightning Field, The New York Earth Room, and The Vertical Earth Kilometer, each commissioned by Dia and completed in 1977. To celebrate this occasion, Dia will premiere De Maria’s Truck Trilogy (2011–17) at Dia:Beacon in September and publish two new books on the artist.

Begun in 2011 and completed posthumously, the Truck Trilogy consists of three classic Chevrolet pickup trucks, which have been stripped of all extraneous elements and details. Placed vertically in the trucks’ flatbeds are circular, square, and triangular polished-stainless-steel rods. Similar to De Maria’s Bel Air Trilogy (2000–11), the Truck Trilogy juxtaposes the elegant lines of mid-century American industrial design with the geometric vocabulary that underscores more than fifty years of the artist’s practice.

Coinciding with the Truck Trilogy installation, Dia will release Artists on Walter De Maria, the second publication in a series culled from Dia’s Artists on Artists lectures. This publication will include Terry Winters’s account of working on the construction of The Lightning Field as well texts by Richard Aldrich, Jeanne Dunning, and Guillermo Faivovich and Nicolás Goldberg.

On November 1, Dia will publish Walter De Maria: The Lightning Field. The first book of photography of The Lightning Field will feature dozens of never-before-seen images by photographer John Cliett, who lived at the field for several months between 1978 and 1979 and worked closely with De Maria to document the changes in light across the poles throughout the day. The photographs will be accompanied by texts from De Maria, Robert Fosdick, and Jessica Morgan.

The works in the Truck Trilogy were fabricated by a team from Art Crating Inc., Archive Fine Art, and Milgo/Bufkin and Gagosian Gallery provided support for the fabrication.

Charlotte Posenenske
Dia:Beacon
Fall 2018

Dia Art Foundation is organizing the first retrospective of German artist Charlotte Posenenske in North America. The exhibition will premiere at Dia:Beacon in October 2018 and will recover Posenenske’s legacy as a critical and prescient voice within contemporary art.

Posenenske’s body of work was produced in an exceptionally focused and abbreviated period between 1956 and 1968, after which she turned away from the art world to pursue the study of labor. Charlotte Posenenske: A Retrospective will highlight the artist’s critical contributions to the development of serial, site-specific, and participatory practices. Embracing reductive geometry, serial repetition, and industrial fabrication, Posenenske developed a form of mass-produced Minimalism that pointedly addressed the pressing socioeconomic concerns of the decade, circumventing the art market and rejecting established formal and cultural hierarchies.

While Posenenske exhibited widely during the years that she was active as an artist—alongside peers such as Carl Andre, Hanne Darboven, and Sol LeWitt—her contributions to the discourse of Minimal and Conceptual art remain largely overlooked and unexamined. Dia’s exhibition will comprise the most significant and in-depth examination of her practice to be mounted since her death.

Charlotte Posenenske: A Retrospective will be accompanied by a hardcover, full-color book published by Dia.

Charlotte Posenenske: A Retrospective is made possible by significant support from VIA Art Fund. Generous support is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.
