A project by Martha Rosler, If You Lived Here (1987-89) developed parallel to (and sometimes in dialogue with) Group Material’s project Democracy and used similar strategies of public debate and collective creation. While Democracy focused on the nature of modern democratic processes, their contradictions and possibilities, If You Lived Here explored issues of community and housing for artists, gentrification, homelessness, real estate, and urban planning. The project incorporated various artist interventions; public discussions styled as “town meetings,” emphasizing audience participation; and rigorously compiled research.
