The Landsburg quarry of the Nordhessische Basalt union. |

The Landsburg forest below the quarry. Oaks and beech trees grow here. |

On the top of the volcano begins the giant hole of the quarry. |

Panorama view shows the situation, the bottom of the hole is filled up with water. |

The hot melted rocks coming out of the volcano cooled down 60 million years ago while dinosaurs lived here in the period of tertiär. |

A detail view of the basalt stones. Most of them are broken into short pieces like boulders, used to build new highways. |

Mr. Weiß, the foreman of the quarry, carried the basalt stones for Joseph Beuys 7000 Oaks with his caterpillar during 1982-1987. For this extension of the project in 1996 he did also his best to pick out the biggest 15 stones which are very rare. |

These are the 15 selected stones for Dia Center for the Arts. |
