About the Program
Teens and adults join teaching artist Amanda Long in exploring the themes of energy, entropy, and cycles in the work of Dia artists such as Robert Smithson, Joseph Beuys, and John Chamberlain through a short tour and interactive workshop. This workshop will teach more advanced circuit building and allow for more elaborate projects than the 11:30 workshop.
What are different types of energy? How do you make energy? Using materials such as copper, felt, and zinc, workshop attendants will have the chance to explore these questions by experimenting with conductors, insulators, and building a fruit or vegetable battery that powers a light or clock in the Dia:Beacon Learning Lab.
About the teaching artist:
Amanda Long is a sculptor investigating light, color, perception and the abstraction of the human form through technology. Her work has been exhibited at Bring to Light NYC, the Dumbo Arts Festival, the Mattress Factory Museum, and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. Amanda received a MFA in Art from Carnegie Mellon University, a BFA in Sculpture & Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a BS in Cell & Molecular Biology from Tulane University. Recently, she developed a traveling interactive video installation, White Light, for young audiences in Pennsylvania, sponsored by a Spark Grant from the Sprout Foundation. Presently Amanda lives and works in Long Island City, NY and is a production assistant at Art21. For more information visit www.amandalong.org.
